The £17 Billion Bin: How Ample is Fighting the UK's Food Waste Habit

Let’s be honest: nobody feels good about scraping a perfectly fine—if slightly forgotten—lasagna into the bin. Yet, according to the latest WRAP report on Household Food and Drink Waste in the UK , we’re doing it a lot. Specifically, UK households generated a staggering 6.0 million tonnes of food and drink waste in 2022 alone.

That equates to about 88 kg per person. If you're struggling to visualise that, imagine carrying 88 bags of sugar straight from the supermarket to the rubbish heap. At Ample, we think there's a better way to spend your afternoon.

The Real Cost of "Oops"

The environmental impact of this waste is massive—associated with 8-10% of global greenhouse gas emissions—but the hit to your wallet is just as jarring. In 2022, the edible food we threw away cost UK householders £17 billion.

For a family of four, that is roughly £1,000 a year literally going down the drain (or into the residual bin). Here is a breakdown of what we're tossing most often by edible weight:

  • Fresh Potatoes: The reigning champion of the bin.

  • Composite Meals: Home-made or pre-prepared dishes.

  • Standard Bread: A staple that often goes stale before its time.

  • Milk: Often discarded because we bought a pint too many.

Why Are We Wasting?

The WRAP research shows that our intentions are usually good, but our execution... well, it's human. The primary reasons for wasting edible food include:

  • Not Used in Time (39%): Food that smelled or looked "off," or had passed the date on the label.

  • Cooked, Prepared, or Served Too Much (25%): The classic "eyes bigger than our stomachs" scenario.

  • Personal Preference (22%): Discarding things like potato skins because we perceive them as inedible (even though they're not!).

How Ample Supports a Circular Future

WRAP highlights that tackling this is a "systemic issue" that requires businesses to help citizens buy only what they need. At Ample, we have built our principles around exactly that.

1. Precision Portioning

Since 25% of waste comes from preparing too much, Ample focuses on providing the right amounts for your needs. By helping you avoid the "bulk-buy trap," we ensure that composite meals—the second most wasted food type—actually end up in your stomach, not the landfill.

2. Extending the "Use-By" Mindset

A huge £6.8 billion worth of food was wasted simply because it wasn't used in time. We advocate for the WRAP principle of changing the environment around food. Our products are designed to be shelf-stable or perfectly timed, reducing the pressure to "eat it or lose it" that leads to 17% of waste being caused by date labels.

3. Redefining "Edible"

Did you know that 22% of food waste is linked to personal preferences or "perceived" inedibility? For example, many people toss potato skins, even though they are perfectly edible. Ample is committed to using the whole ingredient wherever possible, supporting a Circular Living system that respects the energy and water used to grow our food.

Small Changes, Big Impact

The WRAP report is a wake-up call, but it’s also a map. It shows us that by focusing on portioning and timing, we can save the planet about 16 million tonnes of CO_2 equivalent every year.

We’re proud to align with the UK Food and Drink Pact and Sustainable Development Goal 12.3 to halve food waste by 2030. Together, we can make sure "Ample" describes what’s on your plate, not what’s in your bin.
