A Decade in the Making: What the New School Food Standards Mean for Our Children (And How Ample is Ready to Help)

For the first time in over a decade, the UK government has announced major reforms to the school food standards. Here at Ample, we couldn't be more thrilled.
We have always believed that the food we serve our children directly impacts their health, their happiness, and their ability to learn. The government’s latest announcement is a monumental step forward in tackling childhood nutrition, focusing on delivering healthier, more balanced, and tastier school meals.
But what exactly is changing, and how can schools prepare for the new era of school dining?
The Key Changes: A Recipe for Better Health Following a comprehensive consultation earlier this year, the updated legislative framework outlines strict new guidelines designed to boost nutritional value and remove highly processed, unhealthy options from the dinner hall.
Here is what schools need to know:
Complete Plate Consistency: Every single savoury meal must now contain three core elements: a starchy carbohydrate, a source of high-quality protein, and a hearty serving of vegetables or salad.
Saying Goodbye to Deep-Fried Foods: In a massive win for children's cardiovascular health, deep-fried foods will be entirely banned across all schools.
Powering Up with Fibre: Foods rich in fibre, such as lentils and pulses, must be on the menu at least once a week.
Strict Limits on Sugar and Fat: Starchy foods cooked in fat or oil are limited to twice a week. Sweetened desserts will also be capped at twice a week in secondary schools, and just once a week in primary schools.
Phasing Out Processed Meats: Processed meat is now banned completely in primary schools and restricted to just once a week in secondary settings.
Smarter Hydration: An updated list of permitted drinks will be rolled out to reduce hidden sugars.
(Note: There are currently no new measures regarding nuts or dried fruit).
Navigating the Timeline While parliamentary approval is still required, the majority of these changes will come into force in September 2027. To support deliverability, a few measures—such as those relating to healthier drinks and pulses in secondary schools—will be phased in from September 2028.
How Ample Makes Compliance Effortless (and Delicious) We know that for headteachers, catering managers, and local authorities, overhauling a menu to meet strict new statutory guidelines can feel overwhelming. Balancing compliance, tight budgets, and the diverse palates of young children is no easy feat.
That’s where Ample comes in.
Our mission has always aligned with these new standards: Better Food, Brighter Futures: Championing Our Children’s Health with Every Bite. We don't just meet these new government guidelines; we have been pioneering them.
Working with Ample means you don't have to worry about the logistics of removing processed meats or creatively integrating lentils and pulses into meals that kids will actually want to eat. Our expert chefs and nutritionists have already developed vibrant, compliant, and kid-approved menus that make healthy eating exciting. We take the stress out of the regulatory environment, allowing schools to focus on what they do best: educating the next generation.
The policy landscape around healthy eating and government intervention is evolving rapidly.
